The Edge – New York

Am ersten Abend unserer USA Reise und unserer Ankunft in New York, wollte wir gerne die Gelegenheit nutzen noch von einem der Wolkenkratzer in Manhatten den Sonnenuntergang zu fotografieren. Hierzu wäre eine offene Plattform natürlich ideal um nicht von innen mit entsprechenden Reflektionen Bilder zu erstellen. Durch früherer Aufenthalte in New York war natürlich das Empire State Building bekannt, hier gibt es eine offen Plattform die “nur” durch ein Gittersystem geschützt ist. Alternativ wäre auch das “Top of the Rock” vom Rockefeller Center im 70. Stock eine mögliche Wahl. Es liegt schön mittig und bietet einen schönen Blick Richtung Empire State Building wie auch dem Central Park. Noch “relativ” neu ist dabei “The Edge“, einer Plattform am Hudson Yard, das sich auf einer Höhe von 336 Metern befindet und sich selbst als höchste Aussichtsplattform der westlichen Welt bezeichnet. Durch die westliche Lage natürlich ein ideale Lokation für einen Sonnenuntergang. Auch wenn es sich um eine offene Plattform handelt, gibt es als Schutz Glaswände, allerdings befindet sich auch eine Treppe auf der Plattform, so das man von dort auch frei fotogarfieren kann. Wir entschieden uns also für “The Edge” und buchten rechtzeitig vorab entsprechende Tickets für die Aussichtsplattform, dies sollte man wirklich vorab tun, vor allem wenn man zur Abendzeit/Sonnenuntergang hoch möchte. Natürlich ist auch “The Edge” gut besucht, aber wir konnte trotzdem recht gut fotografieren. Was wirklich sehr schade ist, aber auch ein grundsätzliches Problem bei den anderen Plattformen darstellt, dass eine Mitnahme eines Stativs nicht möglich ist. Somit sind Langzeitaufnahmen schwierig möglich. Dennoch denken wir, sind ein paar schöne Aufnahmen entstanden.

On the first evening of our trip to the USA and our arrival in New York, we wanted to take the opportunity to photograph the sunset from one of the skyscrapers in Manhattan. An open platform would of course be ideal for this so that images are not affected from the inside with corresponding reflections. Of course, the Empire State Building was known from earlier stays in New York, here there is an open platform that is “only” protected by a lattice system. Alternatively, Rockefeller Center’s “Top of the Rock” on the 70th floor would also be a possible choice. It is beautifully located in the middle of Manhatten and offers a beautiful view of the Empire State Building and Central Park. Still “relatively” new is “The Edge“, a platform at Hudson Yard, which is at an altitude of 336 meters and describes itself as the highest viewing platform in the western world. Due to the western location, of course, an ideal location for a sunset. Even though it is an open platform, there are glass walls for protection, however, there is also a staircase on the platform, so you can take photos freely from there as well. So we decided to try “The Edge” and booked tickets for the viewing platform well in advance, you really should do this in advance, especially if you want to go up in the evening/sunset. Of course, “The Edge” is also well attended, but we were still able to take quite good pictures. What is really a pity, but also a fundamental problem with the other platforms is that it is not possible to take a tripod with you. Long-term recordings are therefore difficult to achieve. Still, we think we got some nice shots.
